Mickey Makes an IMAX Return at New Edwards
Week of December 24-30, 1999: HOUSTON BUSINESS JOURNAL
Houston's venue of the Disney release of Fantasia/2000 is the new Edwards Marq*E IMAX Theatre, Houston's only IMAX screen not attached to a museum or educational facility.
The Edwards IMAX is debuting New Year's Day at the corner of Silber and the Katy Freeway, one week after the Edwards 23-screen traditional cinema opens on Christmas Day.
The theaters anchor the new 325,000-square foot Marq*E Houston Entertainment Center that's been under construction for months about half a mile outside the Loop 610 on Interstate 10 West. The holiday openings will be replete with Jim Carrey and Arnold Schwarzenegger look-alikes handing out Hollywood treats - from movie posters and t-shirts to soundtrack CD's and Pokemon trading cards.
The Edwards IMAX is the Houston area's third behind the Museum of Natural Science location and the second one in Glaveston's Moody Garden complex.
With the Marq*E construction wrapping up, Edwards Theater circuit has made significant Houston inroads. Edwards, which is the nation's oldest movie theater chain, opened its first Houston movie house just a couple of months ago. Tickets for the Edwards Grand Palace Stadium 24 Cinemas went on sale Oct. 22 at the corner of the Southwest Freeway and Weslayan in Greenway Plaza.
